RACECAR BED

My 3 year-old son was outgrowing his crib, so I thought I would make him a racecar themed bed. I started by looking online for existing designs, but the ones I found were made of plastic, too much money, and would only fit a crib-sized mattress. So I took some plans I found on Lowes.com, and modified the design to accept a twin size mattress.

The wheels are made from 3/4" plywood and cardboard tubing.

Then the wheels were covered with wood putty.

I built two drawers into the body to utilize the space under the bed for storage.

I routed my kid's name into the headboard, then painted it up.

The whole bed was first coated with primer sealer, then topped with a durable gloss finish coat.

The tires were painted with black texture paint, and the centers with chrome paint.

I had plently of automotive product decals from my Javelin project, and they came in handy here! I came up with a checkered flag graphic on the computer, printed out a template, and transferred the design onto the sides of the bedwith an exacto knife. Then, using black, white, and yellow paint, I followed the transferred lines as a guide.
